News from Origins: Organized Play Cards - All Basic Actions Revealed (and Another Sneak Peek at Dice)

I've officially decided that Cons are the best! With news from Origins coming in hot and heavy, we're able to bring you even more news about the upcoming organized play cards and what they may or may not mean for the meta as we move forward. These cards are... pretty interesting, and I'm actually pretty excited to see how people think about them and start to maybe bring them into their decks.

Just remember, if you bring one of these cards to the table, your opponent gets to use it too! Hats off to Ben Lang on Facebook who posted from Origins. We've got a clear shot at all of the Basic Actions, and a peek at the corner of 5 of the 6 monthly prizes (We're missing Cyclops for those of you playing at home).

Last, but not least, we have a look at the grand prize, The Phoenix Force. Let's go under the cut and talk about them in more detail.

The Characters

There's not too much to say, we already knew who the 6 characters were (Colossus, Cyclops, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, and Wolverine) and I talked a bit about them in my previous post on the topic, but to recap quickly we've again confirmed that Spider-Man's variant is an Avenger, while Wolverine's is now unaffiliated, although it's covered here, Colossus and Cyclops have a 'Phoenix Force' affiliation. Here at The Reserve Pool we agree that we'll probably see a Phoenix Force affiliated Namor, Emma, and Magik when the next set of OP for Uncanny X-Men rolls around in 5-6 months.

The first thing that really jumps out at me is that these cards are expensive, Evan's talked about purchase cost distribution before, and how heavily skewed upwards it is, but we're introduced to the concept of an eight cost basic character, holy cow. I don't know what these guys do, but my thought is they're just too costly for me to want to integrate them into my team. Thor's card is interesting, but I'm not sure he's going to make me want to include him. We don't know what these cards do, beyond Thor, so I'll withhold final judgement until I actually see them.

Basic Actions

Deflection - 3 cost: Choose an energy type. Characters
of that type get +1D. ** Those characters get +3D instead.
Global: Pay shield. Prevent 1 damage to a character.

Teleport - 4 cost - Swap your fielded character with a
character of the same energy type from your used pile
or prep area. Spin it to the same level.
*/** Spin the new character up a level.
We've seen Rally! and Teamwork before, so I'm not going to cover them again, but we do have four new actions to talk about, and how they might be awesome. We'll start off with the Month 3 (Deflection) and Month 4 (Teleport) participation prizes. See their full text on the picture below. All I can say to Deflection is 'yaaawn', we already have Taking Cover, which does almost the same thing (is arguably more useful because it works for all characters); the Global Ability is alright, but not unique to this card; and I've got to admit, I'll take Invulnerability over this any day, Invulnerability only costs 2, and it does roughly the same thing which is 'keep your characters from getting KO'd on the attack'. Since you can't use actions on your opponent's turn, I just don't see a huge benefit to buffing your attacking characters' defense. It also a will set your opponent up with his or her own defensive buff if you pick a type that they have fielded as well. All around, not a good card, in my opinion.

Teleport, Teleport on the other hand? Gimmie gimmie. It's definitely a situational card (like so many others), but getting to trade my Beast out for a Strange or a Loki or a Professor X? My Black Widow for a Hulk? My Gobby for a Cyclops? This is fantastic for getting your high purchase cost dice onto the table, and for getting dice off the table that your opponent isn't allowing you to send to the used pile (Gobby, Storm). The double-barreled utility of this card really has me excited, and this is the first time I've looked at a Basic Action and said 'heck yeah I want this in my deck!', and it's for its die, not for its global.

Takedown - 3 cost: Deal 2 damage to a non-shield
character. If it's a Villain deal 4 damage instead.
Global: Pay 1 mask: Target character is [sic]
gains the Villain affiliation until the end of the turn

Collateral Damage - 4 cost: Deal one damage to your
opponent for each opposing character you knock out this turn
Next we have Month 5 (Collateral Damage) and Month 6 (Takedown) both of these make me so happy as well. They are good, they are cool, and honestly Takedown is vicious. Taking a look at them in more detail. Collateral Damage sends damage to your opponent for each character you KO. This is fantastic when coupled with Force Beam, or a Green Goliath Hulk who can clear the field with a clap of his hands. Maybe attack with two Punisher: McRooks and they have to either take 2 damage to keep the characters from getting KOd or they have to take 1 damage when you KO it. Thankfully this doesn't seem to work with Storm: Goddess of the Plains because you 'send dice that do not result in characters' to prep, but they are not officially KOd. THAT would make your opponent cry if you did that, given you have about a 50/50 chance of each character being sent to prep that turn. Still, this seems to couple really well with cards like Cyclops: If Looks Could Kill, Deadpool: Chiyonosake, or Hulk: Green Goliath who all have a high probability of knocking out several characters in the turn they attack.

Takedown is a bit similar, but it's much more targeted as a quick-hit assassination card. You pay a mask to turn a character into a villain, and you use Takedown to do 4 damage to them, excellent. It's global also couples disgustingly well with Mjolnir: Fist of the Righteous that deals 6 damage to each villain. Yes, Mjolnir is expensive (6 bolt), but this global turns it into a one shot on almost any character in the game by declaring them a villain. With multiple masks rolled a turn you could a huge chunk of your opponent's team into villains. Heck, I want to play this deck now, double it up with Collateral Damage and make your opponent cry. As another note, if you bring Takedown and Magneto (Holocaust Survivor or Sonderkommando) you can pay 2 mask to reroll any one of your opponent's dice, not just a villain, but remember, since it's a global combo, your opponent can do it, too!

Of these, I think Takedown is the new meta definer. I want one.

The Grand Prize

Phoenix Force - Force of Nature
Max: 1
While Phoenix Force is active,
each of your opponent's characters
deals no more than 1 damage to
you while attacking.
(That's a recolored Phoenix die)
The Phoenix Force, coming to Earth, and an Organized Play near you... Enh. The Phoenix Force has the same stats as the Avengers vs. X-Men expansion Phoenix, which are approximately the best you can find. (There are better, just saying she's got fairly high end stats). It's a character, not an action, so we know that for certain now, and the die is the same mold as the Phoenix die, just recolored. I'll be honest with you, for 10 cost I expected more. The power is just so... defensive. If you're in a situation where you could be rolling the Ten Energy to purchase this puppy, why are you setting yourself up so defensively?

You're never going to want to attack with her (short of an all-in final victory turn), so her stats aren't fantastic for you on that front. She's also vulnerable to all of the assassin characters of Deadpool, McRook, Storm, and so forth.

I'm not sold on her, and to be honest that makes me happy. The idea that this epic Organized Play reward leaves me a little cold does make me sad, but it also makes me happy because I know she's not going to be this unobtainable win button.

So, rest easy, everyone, I'm less worried now that I've seen her. She's still interesting, and I wonder how the Phoenix Force alignment will play out in this and future expansions, but for right now it's 'cool, but not a game changer'.

Dice!

But come on, we all know you came here for the dice. This is definitely the closest look we've got at the new dice, and although I've seen a few complaints of the colors looking muddy, I've got to say that most of these pop very nicely. The indentations, at least to me, seem a bit crisper, and the coloration more deliberate. I'm not a dice snob, but I'd be happy to include these in my bag or box of dice.

As a refresher for anyone who doesn't recognize some of these we have:

  • Iron Man, Storm, Captain America, Cyclops, Kitty Pryde, Vision, and Juggernaut
  • Marvel Girl, Magik, Bishop, Apocalypse, Sentinel, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Falcon
  • Professor X, Psylocke, Cable, Ant-Man, Namor, Sabertooth, Iceman, Magneto, Pyro
  • Spider-Man, Wolverine, Scarlet Witch, (Red) Hulk, Cerebro, Toad, She-Hulk, X-23, Mr. Sinister, and Emma Frost
Who are you?!
This marks 34 dice. There is an alternate colored Angel that doesn't appear on this stack and there is ONE additional mystery die floating around, with a previous 'mystery' die was confirmed as Vision. What we have left is a die with double mask energy shown, and a light-blueish inking on a clearish red die, and some sort of face that I can't quite make out. I think it might be an action die, but I'm not sure. So, 36 dice, 10 repeats (including that Hulk die), 26 completely new dice. We may be looking at one more die that we haven't seen any clue of, but it might just be we're looking at a slightly smaller set this time around. If there are any more dice in this set (I've heard 38 total), I think WizKids is intentionally keeping them away from the limelight.

Stay tuned for more dice news. You'll hear it when we do.

  1. In one pic I saw of the new dice, there are different color basic action dice. Mike Elliott tweeted about it, basically saying it is for multiplayer. I hope they add rules for a 4 player variant in the Uncanny starter set.

    1. Yeah, I saw that, seems very likely the new colors mean potential multiplayer! Wooo

  • The 'mistery die' seems to be a recolored Mystique die.

    1. I thought the same thing at first, but you can see two of the corners on the non-energy face, and there aren't any numbers. If it was a character die, we would see some number (attack, defense, or fielding cost) in ine of those corners. But im coming up blank on the the action die could be... maybe a Quinjet since there are a few Avengers in the set

    2. I actually think MisterJaPa could be right! Looking at it again there is a hint of something that could be a '1' in the upper left face.

  • Regarding the OP cards...

I wonder if the actions could show up in future sets with different art? Does anyone know if that is something WizKids has done in the past?

    1. My guess is no. WizKids hasn't done a lot of that in the past - to my knowledge. I know a fair amount about how they've structure OP but not a lot about anything regarding their promos.
