News: Even More Uncanny X-Men Dice

Board Game Breakfast @ Dice Tower
Board Game Breakfast at Dice Tower is at it again and has released some more pictures for some new dice coming to us as part of the Uncanny X-Men release this Fall. The expected release date is September 3rd, and it's available for pre-order on many online retailers. Given the rush for Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men, I definitely encourage anyone who is interested to PRE-ORDER NOW.

So, what do we have here? Let's go under the cut and make a few guesses.

Who's Who

My best guesses for the content here are: Magneto, Ant Man, Cyclops, Kitty Pryde, Sabertooth, Vision, X-23, Cerebro (action), Black Panther, Magik, Apocalypse, (Red?) Hulk, Storm, Professor X, and She-Hulk. Honestly, the only one in this pack I'm not sure on is that Hulk die. It's the exact same die as Hulk's level 1 side, but it's red, and there is a Red Hulk (who is an entirely different Hulk than Bruce Banner Hulk). This is making me consider the possibility that a Red variant on Hulk will use the same die as Green Hulk but be... you know, Red.

Who's Back

As we talked about in our last article on the topic, Cyclops, Professor X, and Magneto are back. (Last time we also saw a new version of Angel, but he's not in this set).  We also see the repeat of Storm, and... well, honestly I'm not sure. That Red Hulk could be a repeat or it could be a new variant of an old die. The Marvel Snob in me wants this to be General Ross, but the practical person in me thinks that differentiating between Red Hulk and Green Hulk for a casual audience might be a lost cause. Is a Hulk a Hulk for them? Red Hulk has made many appearances in various cartoons and other secondary media, but he's definitely nowhere near as iconic as 'regular' Hulk. It's really something we're not going to know for a little while, and I am curious. Is this a shape of things to come with secondary characters taking over primary dice. Will we see a Red variant on regular Green She Hulk even though they are two different ladies as well? Certainly War Machine has multiple versions who are implied to be different people inside the mask (Rhodey vs. Parnell Jacobs). We still don't see a Wolverine die, and I'm shocked by this. Maybe he's that mysterious blue and yellow fist die in the upper level corner of Zeroeo's picture. So, all in all about 5.5 old characters back, so far, that we know of. This puts us well into the range where 'more than 30 all-new characters and dice' would be true even if we get those duplicates.

Who is Nowhere to be Found

There are pretty much no Avengers and Fantastic Four here. It's not entirely true, but as far as people who have an argument for being Avengers we have: Black Panther, Ant-Man, Vision, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, and Scarlet Witch. Quicksilver has a technical argument for being an Avenger, as does Falcon, but we've seen that Quicksilver is in the X-Men, and Falcon is unaffiliated. As to which ones of these are 'iconic' Avengers, really only Ant-Man, Black Panther, Vision, and Scarlet Witch.

And the Fantastic Four... oh Fantastic Four. Ant-Man, Namor, and She-Hulk have some vague justification for fitting in with them. Ant-Man (as Scott Lang) and She-Hulk have been affiliated with the Fantastic Four lately, but they certainly aren't the first people you think of when you think Fantastic Four.

With a full thirty one dice revealed now, we have only about 7 more slots left to fill out the Avengers and Fantastic Four factions, and I don't think it's going to happen. I'm not surprised that the Uncanny X-Men set has mostly X-Men, but it is going to seriously throw off faction balance until a new set comes around the corner. I really wouldn't care, but for the introduction of the Teamwork Basic Action from the OP is going to seriously unbalance the ability to use Avengers and Fantastic Four teams.

And, my personal pet peeve: where is Sue Storm!?

What We Know Now That We Didn't Before

Ant-Man and Kitty, maybe Vision and Magik, look to be filling in some smaller purchase cost character areas, but we still have a lot of expensive looking dice in there. As Evan discussed in great detail there is a lot of really expensive dice in the first set, and it's just not supported by the play style that we've come to expect, at least in our games.

If Cerebro doesn't allow you, in at least one of its forms, to go into your bag and pick an X-Men character and put it in your Prep Area, I think I might officially quit the game. (Sarcasm, obviously). This BETTER be a tutor die.

I'm very curious to see what the eventual purchase cost of these dice are.

What's Left

We need probably 1 more Action to compliment Cerebro, and about 5 more characters to fill out the expansion. Obviously we only know a few purchase costs but they seem to be in line with what we've seen in Avengers vs. X-Men. The Reserve Pool will keep you posted as the story develops!

More Breaking News!

Dice Tower has posted to  with some more dice. I've uploaded it here for posterity! What's new, we have some ACTUAL DICE, and they look much better than the promotional ones. We have new action dice colors as well. Wolverine is confirmed down here, and definitely the die that I had picked out previously as maybe being him. Kitty Pryde looks to have a clear die, excellent, Ant-Man has a second zero-cost face to field. A red-on-blue Spider-Man and an orange-on-black Iron Man are also visible. The white-on-blue shield die seems to be Captain America. Looks like Emma Frost is getting an ice-clear die as well, Toad will be a fist.

With the addition of Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America and Spider-Man we may get a smattering of Avengers in this, and it might give us She-Hulk and Ant-Man as Fantastic Four.  Falcon's stat line looks like it's going to be very similar to Angel's. So Exciting!

  1. The clear die is Emma Frost. The white on blue die is an alt color Captain America. The top two red translucent dice are unknown I think.

    1. I'd almost think the right one was Vision - the part of a character face you can see looks very much like the bottom part of Vision's face from the render - but even if that's a dark green rather than black, that doesn't make much sense as a color scheme. I'm pretty sure the other one is a previously unannounced character, but I can't make enough out of it to say who.
