What if... Hidden information in Dice Masters

Our recent discussions in the podcast regarding quadrant theory and role assignment are just as important in this game as they are for any other CCGs. However, some of the nuance is missing. Not only do we know all of the dice that are available, we know every global, every possible ability that can be used, and everything else. It makes a level of bluffing and deception in this game impossible because we simply know too much.

That's the nature of the beast in a deckbuilding game, when players pick from a common pool of cards. But except for the basic actions, we don't have cards in common.

So, just for fun, what if we could find ways to hide a little more from one another...?

YGO/D&D Constructed Dragon Team: The Roster

Who doesn’t like dragons? Personally, my childhood was littered with various dragon references from TV shows to video games to professional wrestlers. Even as an adult, I love video games such as Skyrim and Dragon Age and the Ultimo Dragon, though now retired, is still one of my all-time favorite wrestlers. Though it wasn’t one of my favorite cartoons as a child, I always remember where the people of the middle ages kept yelling “The dragon!” over and over because of the dragon that had been attacking their town. And let’s not forget one of the most famous dragons… . Back to Dice Masters: dragons are here and they are a very real threat. Using strictly D&D and YGO, let’s make a fun, competitive team that focuses on using dragons to burninate your opponent.

Erratas, PXG, and the Future

The recent errata of Spider-Man: Wall Crawler was a good step. It eliminated the potential for a high probability turn three kill, though of course those are still possible. It was, however, nothing but a step. There is still more work to be done, and that is because of the Professor X Global.

Effective use of PXG is incredibly important in the current format and while it does allow you to accelerate your buys, it does not actually allow for much more flexibility in a competitive format than previous teams did. This is because it generally makes four cost characters the most viable, and the six or sevens still sit on the side. There might be slightly more variety, but they're simply variations on a theme rather than something wholly new.

PXG isn't an issue because it accelerates your buys. It's that it allows you to control with a high degree of certainty which dice you will be able to roll.

Dice Masters Community: Marvel's Galactus

This whole Dice Masters game has me pretty hooked, but the only reason I was interested in it in the first place was because of Marvel. So, a year ago when I had first heard of this game, I had no intention of ever buying the Yu-Gi-Oh and Dungeons & Dragon sets. I just wanted Marvel, and maybe DC. That’s just how much fun this game is though. Yu-Gi-Oh came out last month (I purchased my starter set and a complete set of commons and uncommon off of ebay), D&D BFF comes out this month (I preordered my starter and gravity feed), and DC Justice League comes out next month (I plan on getting the starter and a common/uncommon lot like I did for Yu-Gi-Oh). For a game that started out with back-to-back Marvel sets, we are now having 3 non-Marvel sets released in a row. Maybe us Marvel fans feel like “our” game is being impeded upon. I get that. I disagree, since this was never meant to be a Marvel exclusive game, but I understand. So for those of you not buying YGO, D&D, or DC Dice Masters sets, we still have months to go before Age of Ultron. Maybe this can hold you over until then…

Behold: Galactus, devourer of worlds.

Efficiency is King: Why Aggro Hasn't Gone Away

See? I'm even using that image again!
In the early formats of collectable card games, aggressive strategies appear to have the upper hand at first because they often are among the easiest strategies to grasp. As people learn and grow and find new ways to exploit card abilities, there is usually a shift and other builds become viable winning archetypes. That hasn't been the case in Dice Masters to this point, and I'd like to share the reasons why.

One of the earliest articles that I wrote for this website made note of the fact that not only do we need to draw comparisons between this game and collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon - we also need to compare it to deck building games. The reason is pretty obvious. This game has its roots as much in Quarriors as it does in CCGs. And Quarriors, of course, is just a deck building game with dice instead of cards.

Don't Expect the Fantastic Four Anytime Soon

It's pretty widely considered that the Fantasticar and Sue Storm were late pulls from the Uncanny X-Men starter set. It's looking more and more like they and others won't be in anything for the foreseeable future. A bit of background.

Late in 2014, Marvel discontinued the "Fantastic Four" and "Ultimate Fantastic Four" comic series.

Last May, Bleeding Cool News noted that artists had been specifically instructed not to use anything connected in any way to the Fantastic Four.

Most notably, no Fox-owned characters appeared on the cover of Marvel 75, despite the popularity of the X-Men and the fact that the Fantastic Four were Marvel's FIRST.

I could go on. The most recent news? During GAMA Trade Show, Upper Deck Entertainment - the company behind the phenomenally successful "Marvel Legendary" deck building game - announced that they would be . Meanwhile, Marvel has killed Wolverine and Deadpool in the comics and limited toy and shirt licensing on Fox-owned properties.

And as far as we know, at this point, only Wolverine will be in the Age of Ultron set.

The bottom line is that until Fox and Marvel can settle their differences as far as creative control over the X-Men and Fantastic Four go, expect these heroes to be in short supply everywhere.
